2009Orange Butterfly
Pacific Science Center, Seattle, WA, USA
Canon EOS 40D | ISO 800 | 200mm | 1/200 sec | F/4.0
First image in a little while and it’s an “oldie.” This one was captured in the Tropical Butterfly House at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center. Great location for an afternoon of fun…
Just came back from a trip to the Galàpagos Islands in Ecuador. So you can look forward to more wildlife and bird photography in the upcoming posts…

I really like how the flower is so bright that it’s actually the first thing my eye is drawn to – and THEN I look at the butterfly. I’m only a little curious if a much tighter (or square) crop would make it even stronger (like in your thumbnail!)…

Good points Justin and thanks for the suggestion. I realized that by most standards, this is a pretty cluttered background but for some reason I felt very attached to the ferns framing the shot in the upper right corner and I didn’t want to crop it out… I also like the feeling of “discovering” the butterfly rather than the image being too much of a butterfly close-up.

beautiful composition that reminds me of summer.

I would say for me it works as it is. The composition is fantastic, being the butterfly the most contrasted thing in the image (orange against green), and with sharp focus while the background is blurred. Don’t crop anything, the context balances the image, which is beautiful and inspiring.
